Chiaki-ng on ROG Ally, Legion Go & Windows Handhelds – Setup Guide

Windows gaming handhelds like the ROG Ally, Legion Go and MSI Claw are just small Windows PCs — so chiaki-ng runs on them exactly like it does on a desktop. Install the Windows build, pick 720p/60 for the best balance of smoothness and battery life, and your PS5 streams to a handheld that Sony’s official app never targeted.

New to chiaki-ng on Windows? Start with our Windows download & install guide first.

Install It Like Any Windows App

There is no special handheld build — use the standard Windows release (x64):

winget install –id=StreetPea.chiaki-ng -e

or via Chocolatey:

choco install chiaki-ng

Prefer no package manager? Grab the portable ZIP from the download page and extract it anywhere — handy if you keep games and tools on a microSD card.

Recommended Settings for Handhelds

Setting Suggested value Why
Resolution 720p Matches the small screen; far less bitrate needed for smooth motion
Frame rate 60 fps Feels dramatically more responsive than 30 fps for action games
Bitrate Start at 10,000 Kbps, raise until stutter Handheld Wi-Fi antennas are weaker than a desktop’s
Renderer Try Vulkan first, then OpenGL (v1.10.0+) One path is usually faster per GPU/driver — test both
Battery tip: streaming is mostly network + video decode, which sips power compared to running a game natively. If your handheld lets you set a TDP/performance profile, a lower-power profile is usually fine for chiaki-ng and buys you a lot more play time.

Controllers: Built-in Gamepad Just Works

The Ally/Go/Claw present their built-in controls as a standard XInput gamepad, which chiaki-ng picks up automatically. If buttons feel wrong, open the controller mapping panel in chiaki-ng and remap — the mapping database covers most layouts. For the full fix list see fix controller issues.

Overlay & Hotkey Conflicts

Handheld companion apps (Armoury Crate, Legion Space and similar) love to inject overlays and global hotkeys. If chiaki-ng stutters, loses focus, or a hotkey does nothing:

  • Try disabling the in-game overlay of the companion app while streaming.
  • Check whether a companion-app hotkey collides with a chiaki-ng shortcut (see keyboard shortcuts).
  • Exact menu names vary by app version — use the app’s own settings search if the paths below don’t match your version.

Still laggy after that? Work through fix lag & input delay — handheld Wi-Fi is the usual suspect, not the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does chiaki-ng work on the ROG Ally?

Yes. The ROG Ally runs Windows 11, so install the standard chiaki-ng Windows build (winget, Chocolatey or portable ZIP). Its built-in controls appear as an XInput gamepad that chiaki-ng recognizes automatically.

Does chiaki-ng work on the Lenovo Legion Go?

Yes — same story as the Ally. Legion Go is a Windows handheld, so the regular Windows release works. If Legion Space’s overlay interferes, try disabling it while streaming.

What resolution should I use on a handheld?

720p at 60 fps is the sweet spot: it looks sharp on a 7–8 inch screen, needs far less bitrate than 1080p, and saves battery. Raise the bitrate gradually until you see stutter, then back off a step.

Will streaming drain the battery fast?

Much less than native gaming. Streaming is mostly Wi-Fi plus video decode, so a lower TDP/performance profile is usually fine and extends play time significantly compared to running games locally.

Chiaki-ng vs Steam Deck — which handheld is better for remote play?

Both work well. Steam Deck has a native Flatpak build (see our Deck guide) and game-mode integration; Windows handhelds run the standard Windows build with zero Linux fuss. Pick the handheld you already own — don’t buy one just for chiaki-ng.
